Launch Complex 21/22 was built at a cost of about $2.2 million. Construction began in 1956, with acceptance by the Air Force on February 26, 1957. The complex first consisted of two flat launch pads, Launch Pads 21 and 22. Beginning in 1959, the complex was modified with the construction of a hardened shelter on Launch Pad 21with a remaining flat pad at Launch Pad 22. The hardened shelter was divided into two identical halves, referred to as Launch Complex 21 Cell 1 (south) and Launch Complex 21 Cell 2 (north). The cells are often referred to as Launch Pads 21-1 and 21-2. These cells were used for the launching of Mace missiles. The site is currently abandoned, with the blockhouse converted to office space and the hardened Mace cells preserved.
